Fine Tuning preview: 9/27/26

Of all the times I saw Echo and the Bunnymen in concert — from their first show in Michigan at Bookie’s in 1981 to last year’s performance at The Fillmore Detroit — I gotta say the most memorable show was the one they played at Pine Knob with New Order in the summer of 1987 — that’s what I call a double bill! Backstage at the meet ‘n’ greet, I had a great conservation with Echo drummer Pete de Freitas, truly one of my favorite rock and roll timekeepers. Less than two years later, Pete died in a motorcycle accident at the tragically young age of 27. And what is it about all the musicians who died at 27? Cobain, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Brian Jones, Amy Winehouse, etc., etc. Echo and the Bunnymen still features founding vocalist Ian McCulloch and guitarist Will Sergeant, and this Sunday on Fine Tuning I’ll be featuring “Apples for Isaac” their first studio recording in over a dozen years. Also in the mix will be a 75th birthday tribute to Sting, and songs from Michael Kiwanuka and Morphine. Fine Tuning: Sundays from 3 to 6 p.m. on ann arbor’s 107one.
