After releasing five superb albums of outlaw country that would’ve surely gained the approval of Hank Williams and Waylon Jennings, Sturgill Simpson changed his stage name to Johnny Blue Skies. Why the change? “Sturgill served his purpose, but he’s dead, he’s gone, and I’m definitely not that guy anymore,” says Simpson in an interview with GQ. And who is Johnny Blue Skies? “He’s anybody you want him to be, man,” says Simpson. “”He’s a mythological hero, come to usher us into this new era of love and light.” This Sunday on Fine Tuning I’ll be featuring “Mutiny After Midnight,” the second album by Johnny Blue Skies, and get ready for some sexy, existential, country-disco music that will absolutely dazzle you! Fine Tuning: Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. on ann arbor’s 107one.
