Martin Bandyke’s Moving Pictures Film Series Starts Monday

(Ann Arbor MI) Martin Bandyke’s Moving Pictures is a 13 week film series which will run Monday nights from February 6 through April 30, in conjunction with the start of Ann Arbor’s 107one radio host Martin Bandyke’s 30th year in radio. The series will run a selection of music-oriented films, including everything from classics (“Gimme Shelter,” “Monterey Pop,” “Don’t Look Back”) to newer films receiving their Ann Arbor premiere (“Joy Division,” “Blank City”).

“Martin Bandyke is as much a movie maven as a music aficionado” says Michigan Theater Executive Director, Russ Collins. “Martin has long been an Art House film fan and Michigan Theater booster. We are so pleased to be working with him – and celebrating his milestone anniversary year.”

The series opens Monday with “The Anatomy Of Vince Guaraldi,” about the composer who is best known for his scores for the “Charlie Brown” TV special from the 1960s and 70s. The film plays February 6, 7:00 at the Michigan Theater. Russ Collins and Martin Bandyke will serve as hosts for this kickoff night of the film series.

Martin’s passion for music began back when he was a little boy and his father Ted Bandyke brought home 45s and albums from the record store he worked at in Detroit. Martin played drums in the Zooks, Retro, Assembly, and the Ralph/Martin Combo during the 1970s and 80s, and worked at record stores Dearborn Music and Car City Records during that same time period.

Martin started as a radio host in 1983 when he began co-hosting the one-night-a-week Dimension program at WDET-FM in Detroit along with Ralph Valdez. Then in 1990 he started working full-time at WDET, became a weekday host in 1991, and was Music Director at the station from 1995 until 2005. He currently is the morning drive host at Ann Arbor’s 107one, WQKL-FM.

As part of the series, the audience can expect a few special surprises. For example, instead of showing The Last Waltz (featuring the rock group The Band), The Ark and the Michigan Theater are co-presenting The Levon Helm Band live on Monday, March 19th. Levon Helm was the drummer and frequent lead and backing vocalist for The Band.
