Way back in 1980 a Welsh trio named Young Marble Giants released “Colossal Youth.” their one and only album. Loud and aggressive post-punk bands very much dominated the music scene back then, but YMG proved that sometimes the quietest music can be the most powerful. Featuring vocalist Alison Statton and minimalist instrumentation by brothers Stuart and Philip Moxham, the songs on “Colossal Youth” are mesmerizing in a subtle, subdued way. Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain said that this was one of the ten most influential records he had ever heard! This Sunday on Fine Tuning I’ll be featuring “Winter Sun,” the new solo album by Young Marble Giants founding member Stuart Moxham. And yes, if you treasure “Colossal Youth” as much as I do, you’ll love “Winter Sun” as well. Fine Tuning: Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. on ann arbor’s 107one.
